My guesses as to why small and medium business owners avoid protecting their valuable business data:
I get it. Probably 99.99% of the earth’s population has zero interest in IT security.
You probably love working on your chosen skills, writing content, designing clothing, cooking food, etc.
Who wants to research, install, and monitor nerdy, boring IT security software?
We hear or read stories about storms damaging homes and businesses, car break-ins, ransomware, etc.
Somehow, while we notice these things, we don’t fully believe these events could happen to us.
If we don’t believe bad things could happen to us, we don’t take action to protect ourselves.
Take ransomware, for example.
You read news stories of other organizations in your area getting hit with ransomware and having to pay large amounts of money.
But you might think those hackers will probably not bother me.
Recently, I learned hackers and bad actors now target small and medium-size businesses.
Years ago, hackers attacked Fortune 500 and large firms.
Why? Easy prey. Big payouts.
Those firm’s IT departments installed IT security software to protect their businesses.
Guess who the hackers started to target next?
Right. Small and medium-sized businesses.
Those businesses don’t have experienced IT professionals who can install IT security software and monitor their IT environment regularly.
So, your IT environment could be next in line for phishing scams and ransomware attacks.
This is the sister idea to the above “I’m a Small Fish, Who’s Going to Bother Me?”
You might be thinking: The hackers will target the local hospital, dental practice, etc., because they have patient information that can be stolen.
However, hackers are looking for any opening in any organization’s IT environment to infect it with ransomware and extract money.
Hackers can easily send out hundreds of thousands of emails with ransomware to any business, small or medium-sized.
You’re busy running your business. I get it.
You’re doing marketing, sales, working on client projects, managing co-workers, etc.
At the end of a long, hard day, you’re tired.
So, probably, you don’t want to even think about IT security.
Another day passes, and your valuable business data goes unprotected.
Umm. No. Sorry, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace files are not protected.
Here’s what could happen:
M365 and Google Workspace provide limited protection against accidental data loss, ransomware attacks, or malicious end-user activity.
You might not realize you need to back up and protect your M365 data from ransomware and phishing attempts.
The average salary of a full-time IT person is $75K/year.
You may not have the resources to pay for a full-time IT person.
You wind up putting off hiring anyone.
Through the perfect storm of all of the above reasons, a small or medium-sized business may not set up IT security measures.

We'll back up your Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data in case of accidental deletion.
And we'll set up security agents to detect and prevent malware from sneaking into your IT environment and doing bad things.
As I said above, less harmful intrusions means less chance of bad things happening.
We’ll backup your laptops and computers.
